Moments after a woman was repeatedly stabbed outside the Northeast District Court building this afternoon, a male suspect who was standing over the victim was shot and wounded by an off-duty Baltimore city police officer, police said. Both the suspect and the female victim, who suffered critical injuries, remained hospitalized tonight.

The incident occurred less than a block from the district court building and near the busy intersection of East North Avenue and Harford Road, said Officer Troy Harris, a police spokesman.

It is believed the attack was related to a hearing in court today that involved the couple, but details of what led to the attack were not available, Harris said.

Names of the suspect, the woman and the police officer were not available.

Harris gave this account: About 4:30 p.m., an off-duty Western District police officer in uniform was driving home when he observed a man standing over -- and apparently stabbing -- a woman outside the Walgreens drug store in the 1300 block of E. North Ave. The officer exited his personal car and approached the man while ordering him to stop. When the man refused, the officer used his Taser gun on the man, delivering a surge of 50,000 volts. Undeterred, the man approached the officer in a threatening manner, and the officer pulled out a .40 caliber Glock semiautomatic service weapon and shot the man at least twice in the side of his body. The officer was not injured.

Two city Fire Department ambulances arrived and transported the man and the woman to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where the woman was reported in critical condition and the man was treated for non-life-threatening wounds and also admitted. Charges are pending against the man when he is discharged, police said.

Traffic within blocks surrounding the busy East Baltimore intersection was detoured while police investigated the incident.

The officer was placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
